Stories of Strength
The Distance Jane Carried

In the early mornings, before the sun had fully risen, Jane would begin walking. With a container balanced at her side, she traveled nearly six miles each day to collect water for her family.

Jane is a mother, first and always. Like parents everywhere, her greatest hope: she wants her children to be healthy. To feel safe. To go to school and dream about what their futures could hold. But before clean water reached her village, those hopes came at a cost.

The hours spent searching for water left little time for work, for rest, or for the creative beadwork Jane uses to help provide for her family. Her children sometimes missed school. Her livestock were vulnerable. Each day was shaped by scarcity.

Then everything changed.
When clean water began flowing near Jane’s home, the distance she carried water, and the weight she carried as a mother grew lighter. The long walks were replaced with moments at home. Moments helping with homework. Moments creating beadwork. Moments of rest and connection.

Today, Jane’s children attend school more regularly. Her livestock are healthier. Her home is filled with something that once felt out of reach: peace. Clean water didn’t just improve daily life, it gave Jane back her time, her energy, and her ability to imagine more for her family.

This is Jane’s story, and she is our why. She is the reason we do this work.
