More Than Clean Water

Going to Kenya this year wasn’t in my plans, but I promised myself I’d start embracing the unexpected. This was my second time joining the WMO2H insight trip to East Africa.

I thought I had seen it all. I thought I knew the lay of the land. I thought I knew what was coming. Boy, was I wrong...

This trip was completely different from the one I took 3 years ago. We visited new sites, met new people, heard new stories, and witnessed so much happiness and hope for the future — all because of clean water. It’s honestly amazing what access to clean water can do for an entire generation of youth.
One site that really stuck with me was the all-girls school. When we arrived, an entire community of nearly 500 people greeted us with one of the most incredible celebrations I’ve ever experienced. All because of the impact of the projects WMO2H is committed to building.

But the most powerful part was hearing from a former student who had just graduated college.

She spoke about what life was like 13 years ago when she attended that school. Students had to stop studying throughout the day just to walk and collect water — water most of us wouldn’t even consider drinking, but it was all they had. Now they have clean water that’s easily accessible. They have crops growing vegetables, beans, and fruit. They have opportunity. They have hope.

I could ramble about this trip for days, but I’m here to tell you that no matter how many times you visit Kenya or these communities, it changes your perspective on life.

It makes you question why you aren’t doing more. And it reminds you just how life-changing a basic human need like clean water can truly be.
P.S. We recently opened our first smart water kiosk in one of the communities, and it’s a real game
changer. Can’t wait to share more about that soon.
